The bridge actually links main Batam Island with adjacent Galang Island and the bridge is a marvel of engineering as it majestically spans the water between these two islands.
One of the reasons that people come to Batam is for rest and relaxation and as a result there are a wealth of spas here where you can soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a range of soothing treatments.
One of the most famous places to get a treatment is the Isabella Massage House although there are a huge range to choose from scattered across the city which will mean that wherever you go you will leave rejuvenated and relaxed. If you are a diving newbie and want to get certified then Batam Island is the perfect spot to get your PADI certificate cheaply.
From Batam you can sign up for a course and will be taken out to the neighboring islands in a boat and the visibility here is amazingly clear so you will be able to take in a range of underwater creatures and this is a top spot if you like marine photography. If you are already an experienced diver then you will also find a lot to enjoy here thanks to the huge selection of aquatic life in these waters such as sharks, rays, and turtles.

Bintan Island lies close to Batam and is known for being a luxury retreat with a wealth of delightful high end resorts to choose from. If you are not on a budget then you can think about staying overnight or you can just take a day trip to Bintan and enjoy the pristine white sands and the azure waters. Bintan is slightly less busy than Batam and most people come here to chill out at one of the resident resorts on the island, so if you are looking to get away from the crowds then this is a good choice.
Many parts of Batam are incredibly modern but if you go out to the old villages then there are a wealth of historical relics to enjoy.
These include the stilt houses which are built over the water and this is an amazing sight if you have never seen traditional architecture like this before. At the waterfront city is where you find all the happenings for adventure sports from land to water. Choices of water sports are such as banana boat, parasailing, windsurfing, kayaking and jet ski all around 55 SGD while on land you can try go-kart at about 18 SGD. You can also find these activities at the Nongsa coast or for the less crowded option is Melur Beach in Galang Island.

This temple is famous for its many laughing Buddha statues that come in various sizes and costumes that line around the temple.
The whole temple complex is big and spacious with orphanage, food stalls and a vegetarian restaurant. It is an example of the modern day monuments, where it was opened in after being built by the Chinese community of Batam.

The bridge itself is a spectacular piece of architecture with a total of 7 bridges, though incomplete, they do hold a certain local charm to it. You will find local street hawkers on the bridge who would still be surprised to see foreigners hanging around. If you feel at all uncomfortable ask the driver to slow down, tell him you are not in a hurry, usually they are OK, although we did have to yell at one in Indonesian a few times to get him to drive safely.
If you have to drink it is always better to do it in your own hotel or a family restaurant-cum-bar. If you have to go to an ordinary bar, you must opt for a VIP room or you might land up in "ecstasy" which is nothing but drugs.
There have been instances where drugs were put in one's bag unknowingly and then trap the visitor in the cop net where it will be really tough to "free" oneself unless you are a localite. Batam, with its good ferry connections, is an excellent springboard to the other Riau Islands such as the Tanjung Uban and Kijang Bintan Island and the Sumatra mainland. Good air connections also make Batam a good place to get cheap air tickets to Jakarta and other parts of Indonesia.
