They are called swales, and they're located in the grounds for a very special purpose - to collect the rain and stop it from going to waste and then letting it soak in around the plants.
Another thing that astonishes me about the garden at Vaucluse House are the extraordinary camellias - I mean, they're more like trees. The plants have been growing here since the year dot. If you visit these gardens then look out for one called the waratah camellia - it ought to be grown more often in gardens.
